From the sprawling luxurious resorts to the spectacular Sonoran Desert sunsets, there are so many reasons any time of year to head to Scottsdale. As the temperatures start to cool down in New England, this year-round sun soaked destination is one of our favorite places to visit.

Located just 20 minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, Scottsdale’s untouched natural beauty is reason alone to come here and explore. Scottsdale can be easily described as Aruba of the United States for its near perfect weather all year long (they only receive nine inches of a rain a year compared to Boston’s near 40 inches).

Canyon Suites

Whether you come for business or pleasure, we recommend a stay at the ultra-luxurious Phoenician resort. The 585-room resort that sits on 250 acres first opened its doors in 1988 and has recently completed a massive more than three-year renovation. We recommend reserving a stay in a 1,200-square foot one-bedroom suite at the exclusive Canyon Suites (a private resort within the resort offering just 60 rooms) complete with 1.5 bathrooms, a separate living room with four-person dining area and plush bed with Frette 400-count Italian linens.

The spacious desert and pool view suites here received a three-month facelift in 2016 and now feature more contemporary furnishings, wood-grained entryways, plush interior carpeting, upholstered headboards, quartz stone countertops and vanities, and locally sourced artwork. Outdoor patios and terraces for each suite offer new tiling and furniture, including spacious, round daybeds.

Canyon Suites

When you arrive, you will be greeted by a personal ambassador, who is available to assist in everything from making dinner reservations or spa appointments to chauffeuring you anywhere around the property or select local destinations. The main lobby here has been completely redone and now offers The Canyon Lounge where you can enjoy daily complimentary breakfast each morning along with wine, beer and craft cocktails (available for purchase) in the late afternoon or evenings.

There is a plethora of activities available from beginner to advanced levels. Whether you opt to hike the trails of Camelback Mountain, play a round of golf on the gorgeous redesigned 18-hole course, take an art history walking or cactus garden tour or just enjoy a leisurely afternoon in a private cabana (complete with flat screen TV, restroom and shower and special amenities) at theinfinity Canyon Pool, there are so many things to do without ever having to leave the resort.

J&G Steakhouse

When it comes to dining, the numerous options at The Phoenician range from the upscale J&G Steakhouse to more casual fare at the golf course grill 19th Hole. The award-winning J&G Steakhouse now features a more contemporary interior, yet still offering the same beautiful desert landscape just beyond the floor-to-ceiling window walls. We recommend starting off with a chilled shellfish tower or tuna tartare before moving onto a bone-in ribeye or six peppercorn prime New York sirloin.

Mowry & Cotton

Mowry & Cotton, the new modern American restaurant that replaced Il Terrazzo, is also worth a visit. Chef Tandy Peterson’s crafted menu focuses on cooking techniques using fire, coal and smoke with a hearth oven as the focal point of the restaurant. Standouts dishes designed to be shared include wild mushroom flatbread, the whole roasted sea bass with ancho chili, corn, cotija and lime crema as well as the uber tender charred hanger steak.

The Phoenician

If relaxation is on your mind, be sure to book a treatment at the gorgeous new three-story Spa that houses a Rooftop Pool, Drybar, Aroma Design Bar and Couple's Suite. Here, you can start off with a signature Sonoran scrub, massage and wrap to get you balanced and rejuvenated before finishing off your visit with a sleek and smooth blowout at Drybar to get you looking and feeling your best.

SpaceX owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk gestures during a conversation at the E3 gaming convention in Los Angeles, June 13, 2019.

Tesla must reimburse workers and hold a public meeting in its factory explaining how it broke labor laws after unfairly preventing employees from unionizing, a judge ruled in a National Labor Relations Board complaint Friday, according to media reports.

Administrative Law Judge Amita Baman Tracy found that CEO Elon Musk violated national labor laws when he implied via tweet that Tesla workers who unionized would have to give up their company stock options.

The judge also found that Musk wrongfully terminated one worker for union activity, ordering the company to reinstate them and offer back-pay. The electric car maker also wrongfully issued a warning to another union supporter.

The company must hold a meeting at its assembly plant in Fremont, California, and Musk or the NLRB will read a statement explaining how Tesla broke the law. Musk must attend, the judge ruled.

The ruling stems from complaints originally filed by the United Auto Workers. An appeal is likely, Bloomberg reports, and the NLRB does not have the power to evaluate punitive damages or hold executives personally responsible for labor violations.

Two widely watched indicators on China's manufacturing activity came in above expectations on Monday.

A private survey of China's manufacturing activity, the Caixin/Markit factory Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), was 51.4 for September — the highest reading since February 2018. The latest data was much higher than the 50.2 that analysts polled by Reuters had expected and the 50.4 recorded in August.

PMI readings above 50 indicate expansion, while those below that level signal contraction.

The improvement in the Caixin/Markit survey was driven largely by firmer domestic demand as foreign sales have continued to be dampened by the ongoing U.S.-China trade dispute, Caixin and IHS Markit said in a joint release.

"The trade conflicts between China and the U.S. had a notable impact on exports, production costs and confidence of enterprises," said Zhengsheng Zhong, director of macroeconomic analysis at Caixin subsidiary CEBM Group.

"Central policymakers have recently been emphasizing the strong growth in the domestic market. Faster construction of infrastructure projects, better implementation of upgrading the industrial sector, and tax and fee cuts are likely to offset the influence of the subdued overseas demand and soften the downward pressure on China's economic growth," added Zhong.

The release of the private PMI survey followed the announcement of China's official manufacturing PMI. The official data came in at 49.8 in September — the fifth straight month of contraction but slightly exceeding the 49.5 that analysts polled by Reuters had expected. The indicator was also 49.5 in August.

The official PMI survey typically polls a large proportion of big businesses and state-owned enterprises. The Caixin indicator features a bigger mix of small- and medium-sized firms.

The PMI is a survey of how businesses view the operating environment. Such data offer a first glimpse into what's happening in an economy, as they are usually among the first major economic indicators released each month.

PMI data on China is closely watched by global investors for signs of trouble amid a domestic economic slowdown and the ongoing U.S.-China trade dispute.

China's outlook still challenging

Despite the two PMI readings exceeding expectations, analysts said China's economic outlook remains subdued given a weak external environment. The Caixin/IHS Markit survey also showed that manufacturers were still cautious about their business prospects.

"This is unlikely to mark the start of a turnaround," economists at consultancy Capital Economics wrote in a Monday note after the data releases.

"Not only is global demand set to weaken further, but the long-overdue pull-back in property construction is getting under way," they added.

Cedric Chehab, global head of country risk at Fitch Solutions, told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia" that the latest official PMI reading "continues to show that the Chinese economy is going through both a structural and a cyclical slowdown, particularly in the manufacturing sector which is being hit by various headwinds."

Challenges faced by the country's manufacturers include a tightening of financing conditions domestically and the U.S.-China trade war, he added.

With its storied traditions, new world cool and immense natural beauty, it’s no wonder that Portugal is having a complete resurgence, with travelers flocking to this Iberian Peninsula in droves. This southern European country has been popping up as one of the hottest travel destinations of 2019 – and with good reason! With major airlines such as TAP Portugal, Delta and United offering numerous direct flight options to Lisbon from many US hubs across the country – and a solid dollar to Euro exchange rate at the moment –  it’s no surprise that Portugal has been climbing to the top of people’s must-visit lists. The country has everything that a well-rounded traveler could want – a rich and colorful history, a burgeoning culinary scene with some of the best food and wine in the world and extraordinary art and architecture – reshaping the country’s international reputation as an “it” location and a center of creativity.

Bairro Alto Hotel

While there are many hotel options to stay at in Lisbon – Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city –few are as spectacular and special as the Bairro Alto Hotel. Synonymously named for the neighborhood that it’s situated in, the Bairro Alto Hotel is a true pioneer when it comes to being a 5-star luxury property (the hotel also happens to be a member of The Leading Hotels of the World alliance). This charming boutique hotel is located in Lisbon’s best neck of the woods, Bairro Alto, which is known as the most elegant and happening area within the city. This sophisticated and stylish property is positioned at the top of one of Lisbon’s top shopping avenues – and is steps away from the best dining, drinks and exploration that the city has to offer.

Whitney Spielfogel

After a massive, two and half year renovation, the hotel re-opened its majestic doors this past August, having doubled in size but keeping its original charm and character. There are now 87 rooms, including 22 beautifully-appointed suites, and expanded public areas (including four state-of-the-art meeting spaces and a well-rounded wellness area) for guests to enjoy at their leisure. The hotel’s décor displays an eclectic vision that emphasizes traditional touches but does not forego contemporary elegance. Each of the very well-sized rooms (especially by city standards!) are decorated in sophisticated hues that are interjected with super-cool, modern splashes of color and dramatic design. Another major plus? The beds are legendary making your hotel room feel like a complete retreat to come back to after a long day of shopping and sight-seeing.

Bairro Alto Hotel

Terrace BA is the hotel’s extraordinary rooftop restaurant and bar, boasting amazing panoramic views (which could be one of the best in the city!), including those of the Tagus River. With the hotel’s recent grand re-opening, superstar chef Nuno Mendes (of the highly-acclaimed Viajante restaurant in London) returns to his hometown to oversee the property’s food and beverage offerings, reinventing typical local dishes and giving them his international flare.

Bairro Alto Hotel

Lisbon has plenty to offer its visitors. With its picturesque peaks, iconic yellow trams and blue-and-white art deco tiles – all of which the capital is known for – is a vibrant treat for the eyes (and your iPhones). In the “City of Seven Hills”, there is so much to see, taste and do. Shopping in Lisbon is wonderful, with unique accessories and goods crafted by local artisans, available at very affordable prices. Food and wine are also inexpensive thanks to a flourishing gastronomic scene and accessibility to the Douro Valley wine region. And thanks to the city’s location on the southeastern edge of Europe, temperatures rarely drop below 60-degrees Fahrenheit and the days are consistently sunny. Lisbon, in fact, has been constantly named one of the top sunniest cities on the continent.

Whitney Spielfogel

So why is Portugal, as a whole, so trendy for travelers these days? In total, Portugal is home to 15 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Between the country’s centuries-long history, incredibly vast regions to discover (and easy accessibility to each), extraordinary hospitality, expanding sector of high-end luxury hotels, restaurants and shops, this is just the beginning of Portugal hitting its stride. The country is surely enjoying being the coolest destination of the moment – so be sure to jump on the bandwagon (or direct flight for that matter) and book a trip of your Instagram dreams.

Facebook on Friday confirmed that the death of an employee on Sept. 19 was a suicide.

"We are saddened by the tragic news that we lost one of our employees, Qin Chen, to suicide last week at our Menlo Park headquarters," a spokeswoman for the company told CNBC in a statement.

"And, we are doing everything we can to support his family and loved ones during this time. All of our actions are being guided by a world leading external expert in suicide prevention. We deeply care about our people and are providing on-site counseling to our employees and those who work on contract with Facebook, and offering mental health and suicide prevention support for all employees. Lastly, we are bringing the community together by creating safe spaces to openly share through our internal resource groups."

The tech company issued the statement after numerous people gathered outside the company's headquarters on Thursday to demand "justice for Qin."

"Facebook needs to tell us what exactly happened, what happened when he got to work, what happened one week prior," said Bill Young, who was one of the volunteers that organized the protest. "Facebook knows all of this."

There are rumors that Qin may have endured bullying at Facebook, Young said. However, Young is not an employee at the company and he said that most of the protesters did not work there, either.

A spokeswoman for the company pointed to a Facebook workplace harassment policy page. which states that "Facebook does not tolerate abusive conduct, bullying or other intimidating or aggressive behavior among employees or others covered by this Policy, whether or not it is based on a protected category. If an employee is found to be mistreating his or her colleagues, we will take appropriate action to stop the behavior."

Digital pharmacy GoodRx is now helping patients do more than just price shop for prescription drugs, co-founder and co-CEO Doug Hirsch told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday.

It's going directly into the world of medical services by launching GoodRx Care, which allows people to see a board-certified physician for a number of conditions, starting at just $20.

"We wanted to just have an easy solution that anyone could use to get quick care of the most pressing things that affect millions and millions of Americans, so they can stay healthy and stay out of the hospital," Hirsch said in a "Mad Money" interview.

The service was made possible by GoodRx's acquisition of telemedicine provider Hey Doctor, Hirsch said.

GoodRx's website lists the services it provides. Most are just $20, although those that require a lab may cost more. A visit for acne treatment is $20, whereas tuberculosis testing and referral, for example, is $100.

"Literally within a very short period of time have a visit from a board-certified vision, and if a prescription is necessary, we'll literally send your prescription to the pharmacy near you with a GoodRx coupon," Hirsch explained.

Founded in 2011, GoodRx leverages technology to help people find and compare prescription drug prices. Through its website or app, it provides users with a coupon that can be used at pharmacies to secure lower prices. Hirsch said the coupons are accepted at "virtually every pharmacy in America."

"We're a market place in prescriptions, and with GoodRx Care, we're a market place for both prices for medical care and we're even offering medical care," Hirsch said.

Cramer said he's a believer in GoodRx because he has personal experience with it. In 2017, a prescription cost him $5,000, he said. But last year he used GoodRx for the same drug, and it cost $1,200, Cramer said.

"The only difference was I used GoodRx, which is why I said I can't believe others don't, " Cramer said. "I frankly didn't believe it ... It's like fantasy land."

Cramer then asked Hirsch how GoodRx, which was No. 6 on this year's CNBC Disruptor 50 list, is able to accomplish savings on prescription drugs. The company claims it has helped Americans save $10 billion on prescriptions.

"We went out to the pharmacies and said, 'Can we do better?' Because pharmacies don't want to charge this extraordinary amounts, but they have all sorts of limitations because of this system so they can't actually discount themselves," Hirsch said, referring to the complexities of the U.S. health care system.

"One of the amazing things about American health care these days is there are often huge gaps in care," Hirsch said, adding that, in certain areas, it can sometimes take up to 30 days to see a doctor.

Because of that, Hirsch said GoodRx heard from users that there was a need for more affordable and convenient ways to see a doctor.

"We wanted to provide a service that was easy to use, so anyone could use it, with or without insurance," Hirsch said.

Apple on Friday released a new version of its iPhone operating system, iOS, that fixes many bugs that cropped up when iOS 13 was released earlier this month.

The update fixes a security issue with the way iPhones handle keyboards not made by Apple. "Apple has discovered a bug in iOS 13 and iPadOS that can result in keyboard extensions being granted full access even if you haven't approved this access," Apple said in a security advisory earlier this week.

Friday's update also fixes issues related to iPhone restoring, battery drain, Siri, Safari search, and Reminders sync, according to Apple's release notes.

Anyone with an iPhone released in 2015 or later can download iOS 13.1.1 in the Settings app.

The update comes after Apple accelerated the release of iOS 13.1, a minor release designed to remove bugs, a week earlier than previously announced, a break from the way Apple handled releases in previous years.

Here's the full iOS 13.1.1 change log:

  • Fixes issues that could prevent iPhone restoring from backup
  • Addresses an issue that could cause battery to drain more quickly
  • Fixes an issue that could impact recognition of Siri requests on iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • Resolves a problem where Safari search suggestions may re-enable after turning them off
  • Addresses an issue that could cause Reminders to sync slowly
  • Fixes a security issue for third-party keyboard apps

St. Andrews. The work strikes excitement as well as fear in the hearts of golfers. It’s a golfer’s mecca with 11 world-class golf courses in the county of Fife just outside of Edinburgh Scotland. The literal mother of all golf courses, the Old Course, is there along with some of the top courses in the world. Progyny, a company that manages fertility benefits for employees at large firms, released its IPO prospectus on Friday.

For the first half of 2019, Progyny generated $103.4 million in revenue and net income of $4.04 million. That's up from $48.4 million in revenue and $3.3 million in net income in the first six months of 2018.

In the filing, the company says its range of benefits have led to above-average fertility outcomes among members, with in-network IVF pregnancy rates of 60.7%, compared to 52.5% across all IVF clinics.

The stock will trade under the symbol "PGNY" on the Nasdaq. The lead underwriters are J.P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

CNBC previously reported that Progyny had hired banks for an IPO and its S-1 was imminent.

Progyny sells health and technology services to large employers, counting Facebook and Microsoft as two of its biggest clients. The company provides resources for employees who encounter fertility issues and helps them manage the cost. It also offers coaches to employees who can provide information about the risks and benefits of procedures like in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and egg freezing.

The S-1 filing comes as investors remain skeptical about IPOs and another digital health company, Livongo Health, has fallen 36% from its July IPO price of $28 per share.

Washington on Friday joined several other states in banning the sale of flavored vaping products amid concern over the mysterious lung illness that has sickened hundreds of people and killed at least a dozen across the country.

Gov. Jay Inslee issued an executive order asking the Department of Health to issue the emergency rule at its next meeting, scheduled for Oct. 9. The ban will apply to products containing nicotine as well as the cannabis extract THC. Inslee said the flavored products especially appeal to youth.

"We need to act for the public health of our people," said Inslee, a Democrat. "I'm confident this executive order will save lives."

The ban is necessary because even if a vaping ingredient or compound were conclusively linked to the illnesses, the state would have no way to identify which products contain the substance so they could be removed from store shelves, Inslee said.

President Donald Trump has said he plans to ban flavored vaping products nationally. New York, Michigan and Rhode Island are among the states that have announced at least temporary bans, while officials in Oregon and California have urged consumers to stop using them. Massachusetts has gone the farthest, issuing a four-month ban on all vaping products — flavored or not.

Inslee also ordered health officials to work with the state's Liquor and Cannabis Board to develop legislation to increase oversight of vapor products, including requiring the disclosure of ingredients and increasing spending on anti-vaping campaigns aimed at teens.

More than 500 cases of the illness have been reported across the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating but has not yet identified a common product or ingredient as the culprit.

This week, Juul Labs, the San Francisco-based company that controls about 70% of the vaping market, announced it is replacing its CEO and will no longer run TV, print or digital advertisements for its e-cigarettes. The company also promised not to lobby against a proposed U.S. ban on flavors.

Symptoms of the vaping illness can include chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, fever and weight loss.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is set to back a U.S. request to impose tariffs on billions of dollars of European goods, potentially sparking a new trade war across the Atlantic, several media reports suggest.

Arbitrators from the WTO are meeting at 10.am. local time in Geneva on Monday to finalize a 15-year-old case brought by the United States. The U.S. seeks compensation for what they say are illegal subsidies granted to the plane maker Airbus by European governments.

Earlier this month, Airbus shares dipped sharply following reports that the WTO will rule in favor of the U.S, granting President Donald Trump the right to slap billions of dollars of tariffs in compensation.

Washington has said it wants to impose tariffs of up to 100% on European exports to the U.S. with an annual trade value of around $11.2 billion a year.

Reuters, quoting sources, reported Thursday that the United States government won't get to that figure but will win the right to impose tariffs on EU goods worth around $7.5 billion annually.

The United States has already drawn up a wide-ranging list of European goods which it says it will select from, once the WTO determines an appropriate amount.

Aside from European-built aircraft and parts, goods on the list included motorcycles, food, drink, clothes, base metal parts and equipment to make jewelry.

Europe seeks Boeing revenge

The EU has its own separate case before the WTO, in which it argues that the U.S. plane maker Boeing receives unfair financial assistance from the U.S. federal government. That ruling from arbitrators in Switzerland is estimated to be about nine months away.

Airbus's Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Christian Scherer, told CNBC last week that the legal action was unlikely to benefit either firm.

"I don't think that the aerospace communities or ecosystems on either side of the Atlantic have anything to gain (by) going at each other's jugular," he said at the launch of the firm's annual commercial outlook.

In April this year, the European Commission launched a public consultation on its preliminary list of products from the United States that it would seek to hit with import tariffs.

The list, representing about $20 billion worth of U.S. exports to the EU, also covered a wide range of items including aircraft, chemicals and food products such as frozen fish and citrus fruit.

Upon arriving, guests are met by beautiful 30-foot mahogany doors opening up into the expanded lobby complete with a Lucite indoor swing, golden elevators and a mushroom-inspired concierge desk. The lobby is also home to the “Magic Box,” a rotating art gallery showcasing local contemporary pop artists. In the evenings, the space is bustling with locals and travelers-in-the-know, making their way to Skybar for a cocktail or Ivory on Sunset for an al fresco meal.

Located at the rooftop pool, Skybar is an open-air, ivory-covered pavilion that features programming both day and night for guests such as summer pool parties, signature Night Market shopping events and performances by world-renowned DJs. Skybar is also notably hard to get into, with guests and the city’s most notable residents lining its walls every night of the week. But don’t worry, the pool area is exclusive to guests until 1 p.m. and then your room key will grant you easy access.

During the day, because of the pool area’s smaller size, daybeds and lounge chairs can be hard to come by, especially once it opens to the public. Be sure to reserve a daybed early with your concierge to avoid the wait list once you’re ready to soak up the sun.

Mondrian offers nine room categories (all pet-friendly) ranging from standard options to the newly-redesigned Skyview Loft and 1,500-square-foot Penthouse. Juxtaposing soft color palettes with hints of blue and playful checkerboard patterns, we loved the mix of Old Hollywood glamour with Alice in Wonderland whimsy. Another nod to the classic story, an art installation depicts a female falling through space, transporting guests into this magical world alongside Alice.

Scale is another theme seen across rooms, with oversized blue lamps and large shimmering dragonfly wings painted across mirrors in the seating area. Inside the bathrooms, chic marble countertops, new tile and a sleek aesthetic provides a soothing spa-like atmosphere. In some rooms, you’ll even find spacious showers with glass walls that open up to the bedroom, creating a fun and flirtatious mood. Sheer curtains are included as well should you prefer to shower in private.

With 24-hour room service, guests can also enjoy a snack in their room at any hour or head down to Ivory on Sunset for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Boasting Italian-inspired fare, the indoor and outdoor restaurant is Instagram-worthy with floor-to-ceiling windows, an open-air setting, ivy crawling up walls and twinkle lights strewn across the space. On the weekends, settle in for brunch fresh smoothies and cold-press juices by Little West alongside dishes such as lobster scramble, Belgian waffles, eggs benedict and steel cut oats.

A 34-year staple in the City of Angels, Mondrian Los Angeles Hotel proves that age is just a number as it continues to stay ahead of the game each year. With a dedication to providing the best service, accommodations, amenities and entertainment year-after-year, there’s no doubt it’ll remain a favorite among affluent jetsetters, celebs and locals alike.
